Al sinds de jaren '80 vindt wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar het Angelman syndroom plaats. Deze onderzoeken werden veelal in de Verenigde Staten uitgevoerd. Door het beschikbaar komen van steeds meer geld, is het onderzoek naar (behandeling van) het Angelman syndroom de laatste 20 jaar sterk toegenomen, vanuit de hele wereld.
