Melatonin Use
Question
How does a family obtain Melatonin (prescription, over the counter, etc.) and what form and dosage is recommended for children? The child in question is currently 26 lbs. Mom was told it was only for adults and comes in a pill form.
Answer of our experts
Melatonin is available over the counter in health food stores. According to my PDR (medical dictionary), there is a 3 mg tablet form with dosage of 1 to 3 tablets, taken as needed, but no more than three times a day (probably an adult dose). There is an oral spray with each spray equivalent to 3 mg and a recommended dosage not specified. I have not recommended this to a specific patient, but I would suggest starting with the pill form and using half, crushed, before bed. The dose can be titrated up (more) until effect is seen
